Novena Day Nine

  • Day NINE

The three Archangels are symbols of God’s care and providence and His intimate concern for His people. Their representations show them to be figures of power and beauty, aiding in the battle against evil and protecting those who call on them. We are surrounded by wonders, and Angels are among the most wondrous. “We believe in one God, maker of all that is seen and unseen,” we profess in the Nicene Creed. The Angels bring God close to us and help us to realize that we are not alone in the universe (Fr. Clifford Stevens).

In a world of fear and desolation, may the Angels bring us to the faces of hope, Jesus Christ and his Mother!

Novena Day Eight

·        Day EIGHT

Each day we go into a battle. Struggling...

Striving...to do good...Knowing in one moment we can slip up and sin. Our spirit must stay strong to fight the battle of our weakness and our humanness.

I see the Angels surrounding us. Swords in hand. Helping us fight those battles... "Fighting the good fight." So we remain ever faithful to Our Father in heaven as St Michael saves our souls.

Special prayers go out to those who are in the midst of the battle and have asked for prayers…you know who you are!

Novena Day Six

·        Day SIX

‘We have to make our choices”, said the Founder,  “to either choose the wide road of little faith, or become authentic witnesses, in the likeness of the martyrs of old who died for their faith. I am speaking of likeness, since to live by faith is equivalent to a real crucifixion” (G. Giaquinta, Our Faith, 1971). Such crucifixion comes not only from external causes, but also from the internal battle against personal, interior negative inclinations. – For this reason we need the divine assistance of the Angels and Saints. We cannot do it alone!

I pray for our conversion of heart and ask the intercession of our Founder, the Angels and Saints!

Novena Day Three and Day Four

·        Day THREE

Glorious Saint Michael, you are our guardian and defender. You are the protector of the Church. Come and assist us as we learn to follow Jesus more closely. Guide us to grow in holiness. Protect us from all evil, especially distractions and addictions that keep us from the Lord. Guard with special care our Holy Father, the Pope, our bishops, priests, all our consecrated and lay people, and especially the children.

·        Day FOUR

Today, more than ever, the world needs to see in us men and women who believe in an ideal; men and women who believe in the Word of the Lord and let it transform our lives to the point of total dedication; men and women who witness the Love that we wish to offer to all. With the help of grace, let us strive to make our commitment to Christ and to the Church ever stronger and our witness ever more credible (Giuliana Spigone).

Novena Day Two

·        Day TWO

We are living through times that are difficult and, therefore, confronted by heroic demands. We are living in a world that requires the “heroism of every virtue.” Let us, too, become solid in our faith, and find the courage to make heroic choices. Thus, we will be able to grow in “unity” and to fulfill the ideal to which we have dedicated our lives (Giuliana Spigone).

My intention today is that the St. Michael intercede for us that we might be  strengthened in our faith and receive the courage we need to stand with those who suffer – the same manner with which Mary stood by Jesus on the cross.

2009 Novena to the Angels

My Mother, My Confidence!

Novena to St. Michael the Archangel, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael

Patrons of the Pro Sanctity Movement

Feast Day: September 29, 2009

Nine days of daily prayer and reflection:

September 20 – 29, 2009 (or start at any time)

Dear Pro Sanctity Family Members and Friends,

We are all going through difficult times these days, with our families, financially, morally, spiritually… Yet we must remember that our strength comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. Jesus, our Savior, rose from the dead and therefore death has no power over us! The pain and the confusion have been and continues to be enormous, but we are at this very moment being strengthened by our experiences and reassured by a hope that never leaves us disappointed. It is in this mixed sprit of sorrow and hope that we begin our annual novena to the Archangel Michael in particular, whom we honor as one of our patrons and defender of our holiness, and we include the great Archangels Gabriel and Raphael. We need all the heavenly helpers available!

Dear Friends, let us begin anew, trusting in the loving protection of our Protector St. Michael the Archangel, “closest to God, who comes to our aid,” as we pray in the Liturgy, and in all the Angels. St. Thomas Aquinas tells us that the Angels can “do so much for us and are so very close to us. We are not nearly so alone as we imagine, whatever the hour or place.”

In this novena we welcome your intentions on our BLOG, so that we may pray for one another and ask our committed praying members to pray for your intentions. Sincerely In Christ,

Teresa Monaghen and Pro Sanctity Local Board of Archdiocese of Omaha

Two possible daily prayers to Saint Michael for your 9 day novena…

Prayer One

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray.

O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.

Prayer Two

O God, you call Angels, men and women to cooperate in your plan of salvation. Grant us, pilgrims on earth, the protection of St. Michael the Archangel and of all the Angels who are in your presence to serve you and contemplate the glory of your face. Amen.

· Day ONE

Dear Saint Michael, your name means, "Who is like God?" and it indicates that you remained faithful when others rebelled against God. Help us, especially the following intentions____________________________________________

"Singing Eagle"

Dedicated to St. Juan Diego Cuahtlatoatizn

Model for Lay Apostles

Pope John Paul II beatified him on May 6, 1990 and canonized on July 31, 2002

INTRODUCTION: "I thank you, Father ... that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was your gracious will" (Mt 11:25-26). (Passage taken from Mass Reading for July 31, 2002)

FIRST MYSTERY: Accepting the Gospel of Jesus

Similar to ancient Biblical personages who were collective representations of all the people, we could say that Juan Diego represents all the indigenous peoples who accepted the Gospel of Jesus, thanks to the maternal aid of Mary, who is always inseparable from the manifestation of her Son and the spread of the Church, as was her presence among the Apostles on the day of Pentecost. (Beatification Homily of 6 May 1990)
YOU MAY REPEAT AFTER EACH DECADE:

Beloved Juan Diego, "the talking eagle"! Show us the way that leads to the "Dark Virgin" of Tepeyac, that she may receive us in the depths of her heart, for she is the loving, compassionate Mother who guides us to the true God. Amen.

SECOND MYSTERY: Holiness and Trust

The information about Juan Diego that has reached us praises his Christian virtues: his simple faith, nourished by catechesis and open to the mysteries; his hope and trust in God and in the Virgin; his love, his moral coherence, his unselfishness and evangelical poverty. (Beatification Homily of 6 May 1990)
THIRD MYSTERY: Our Lady's presence

Living the life of a hermit here near Tepeyac, he was a model of humility. The Virgin chose him from among the most humble as the one to receive that loving and gracious manifestation of hers which is the Guadalupe apparition. Her maternal face and her Saint image which she left us as a priceless gift is a permanent remembrance of this. In this manner she wanted to remain among you as a sign of the communion and unity of all those who were to live together in this land. (Beatification Homily of 6 May 1990)
FOURTH MYSTERY: Holiness in the world for others

The lay faithful share in the prophetic, priestly and royal role of Christ (cf. Lumen Gentium, 31), but they carry out this vocation in the ordinary situations of daily life. Their natural and immediate field of action extends to all the areas of human coexistence and to everything that constitutes culture in the widest and fullest sense of the term…"In order to achieve their task directed to the Christian animation of the temporal order, in the sense of serving persons and society, the lay faithful are never to relinquish their participation in public life, that is, in the many different economic, social, legislative, administrative and cultural areas, which are intended to promote organically and institutionally the common good" (CF n. 42). (Beatification Homily of 6 May 1990)

FIFTH MYSTERY: All children of God; All children of Mary

"The Lord looks down from heaven, he sees all the sons of men" (Ps 33:13), we recited with the Psalmist, once again confessing our faith in God, who makes no distinctions of race or culture. In accepting the Christian message without forgoing his indigenous identity, Juan Diego discovered the profound truth of the new humanity, in which all are called to be children of God. Thus he facilitated the fruitful meeting of two worlds and became the catalyst for the new Mexican identity, closely united to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose mestizo face expresses her spiritual motherhood which embraces all Mexicans. (Canonization Homily July 31, 2002)

Closing:

Happy Juan Diego, true and faithful man! We entrust to you our lay brothers and sisters so that, feeling the call to holiness, they may imbue every area of social life with the spirit of the Gospel. Bless families, strengthen spouses in their marriage, sustain the efforts of parents to give their children a Christian upbringing. Look with favor upon the pain of those who are suffering in body or in spirit, on those afflicted by poverty, loneliness, marginalization or ignorance. May all people, civic leaders and ordinary citizens, always act in accordance with the demands of justice and with respect for the dignity of each person, so that in this way peace may be reinforced. (Canonization Homily July 31, 2002)

Information, Formation, Transformation

August 14, 2009

PRO SANCTITY Virtual RETREAT/PILGRIMAGE

to the Shrine of OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE

MEXICO CITY

DAY ONE

Transformation!

Pay attention along the way…

Mind: What strikes you as you begin the journey with Juan Diego? What did you learn?

Heart: What gift does the Lord have for you on this day? Where is your heart touched?

Hands: Where is the Lord's grace of the taking you? What does He want you to share with the others?

Information

 St. Juan Diego

Juan Diego was born in 1474 in the calpulli or ward of Tlayacac in Cuauhtitlan, which was established in 1168 by Nahua tribesmen and conquered by the Aztec lord Axayacatl in 1467; and was located 20 kilometers (14 miles) north of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City).

On December 9, 1531, a native Mexican named Juan Diego rose before dawn to walk fifteen miles to daily Mass in what is now Mexico City. Juan lived a simple life as a weaver, farmer, and laborer. That morning, as Juan passed Tepeyac Hill, he heard music and saw a glowing cloud encircled by a rainbow. A woman's voice called him to the top of the hill. There he saw a beautiful young woman dressed like an Aztec princess. She said she was the Virgin Mary and asked Juan to tell the bishop to build a church on that site. She said, "I vividly desire that a church be built on this site, so that in it I can be present and give my love, compassion, help, and defense, for I am your most devoted mother . . . to hear your laments and to remedy all your miseries, pains, and sufferings."

The bishop was kind but skeptical. He asked Juan to bring proof of the Lady's identity. Before Juan could go back to the Lady, he found out his uncle was dying. Hurrying to get a priest, Juan missed his meeting with the Lady. The Lady, however, met him on his path and told him that his uncle had been cured.

She then told Juan to climb to the top of the hill where they first met. Juan was shocked to find flowers growing in the frozen soil. He gathered them in his cloak and took them at once to the bishop.

Juan told the bishop what had happened and opened his cloak. The flowers that fell to the ground were Castilian roses (which were not grown in Mexico). But the bishop's eyes were on the glowing image of the Lady imprinted inside Juan's cloak.

Soon after, a church was built on the site where our Lady appeared, and thousands converted to Christianity. Our Lady of Guadalupe was declared the patroness of the Americas.

He died on May 30, 1548, at the age of 74.

Juan Diego deeply loved the Holy Eucharist, and by special permission of the Bishop he received Holy Communion three times a week, a highly unusual occurrence in those times.

Pope John Paul II praised Juan Diego for his simple faith nourished by catechesis and pictured him (who said to the Blessed Virgin Mary: "I am a nobody, I am a small rope, a tiny ladder, the tail end, a leaf") as a model of humility for all of us.

In His Footsteps:

Juan walked fifteen miles to attend Mass every day. Participate in Mass one day this week that is not a Sunday Mass. If this is impossible, take a long walk outside and notice the miracles of God's love during that walk. You may not see roses in the snow or hear music, but there is plenty to praise God for!

Prayer: Blessed Juan, you faced the skepticism and rejection of a bishop and the crowds to bring Mary's message to Mexico. Pray for us that when we are faced with obstacles to our faith we may show that same courage and commitment. Amen

FORMATION

Pope John Paul II - Homily During Juan Diego's Canonization - 31 July 2002

1. I thank you, Father ... that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was your gracious will" (Mt 11:25-26).

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

These words of Jesus in today's Gospel are a special invitation to us to praise and thank God for the gift of the first indigenous Saint of the American Continent.

With deep joy I have come on pilgrimage to this Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Marian heart of Mexico and of America, to proclaim the holiness of Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, the simple, humble Indian who contemplated the sweet and serene face of Our Lady of Tepeyac, so dear to the people of Mexico.

2. I am grateful for the kind words of Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, Archbishop of Mexico City, and for the warm hospitality of the people of this Primatial Archdiocese: my cordial greeting goes to everyone. I also greet with affection Cardinal Ernesto Corripio Ahumada, Archbishop Emeritus of Mexico City, and the other Cardinals, as well as the Bishops of Mexico, of America, of the Philippines and of other places in the world. I am likewise particularly grateful to the President and the civil Authorities for their presence at this celebration.

Today I address a very affectionate greeting to the many indigenous people who have come from the different regions of the country, representing the various ethnic groups and cultures which make up the rich, multifaceted Mexican reality. The Pope expresses his closeness to them, his deep respect and admiration, and receives them fraternally in the Lord's name.

3. What was Juan Diego like? Why did God look upon him? The Book of Sirach, as we have heard, teaches us that God alone "is mighty; he is glorified by the humble" (cf. Sir 3:20). Saint Paul's words, also proclaimed at this celebration, shed light on the divine way of bringing about salvation: "God chose what is low and despised in the world ... so that no human being might boast in the presence of God" (1 Cor 1:28,29).

It is moving to read the accounts of Guadalupe, sensitively written and steeped in tenderness. In them the Virgin Mary, the handmaid "who glorified the Lord" (Lk 1:46), reveals herself to Juan Diego as the Mother of the true God. As a sign, she gives him precious roses, and as he shows them to the Bishop, he discovers the blessed image of Our Lady imprinted on his tilma.

"The Guadalupe Event," as the Mexican Episcopate has pointed out, "meant the beginning of evangelization with a vitality that surpassed all expectations. Christ's message, through his Mother, took up the central elements of the indigenous culture, purified them and gave them the definitive sense of salvation" (14 May 2002, No. 8). Consequently Guadalupe and Juan Diego have a deep ecclesial and missionary meaning and are a model of perfectly inculturated evangelization.

4. This is why the witness of his life must continue to be the inspiration for the building up of the Mexican nation, encouraging brotherhood among all its children and ever helping to reconcile Mexico with its origins, values, and traditions.

The noble task of building a better Mexico, with greater justice and solidarity, demands the cooperation of all. In particular, it is necessary today to support the indigenous peoples in their legitimate aspirations, respecting and defending the authentic values of each ethnic group. Mexico needs its indigenous peoples and these peoples need Mexico!

Beloved bothers and sisters of every ethnic background of Mexico and America, today, in praising the Indian Juan Diego, I want to express to all of you the closeness of the Church and the Pope, embracing you with love and encouraging you to overcome with hope the difficult times you are going through.

5. At this decisive moment in Mexico's history, having already crossed the threshold of the new millennium, I entrust to the powerful intercession of Saint Juan Diego the joys and hopes, the fears and anxieties of the beloved Mexican people, whom I carry in my heart.

Blessed Juan Diego, a good, Christian Indian, whom simple people have always considered a saint! We ask you to accompany the Church on her pilgrimage in Mexico, so that she may be more evangelizing and more missionary each day. Encourage the Bishops, support the priests, inspire new and holy vocations, help all those who give their lives to the cause of Christ and the spread of his Kingdom.

Look with favor upon the pain of those who are suffering in body or in spirit, on those afflicted by poverty, loneliness, marginalization, or ignorance. May all people, civic leaders and ordinary citizens, always act in accordance with the demands of justice and with respect for the dignity of each person, so that in this way peace may be reinforced.

Beloved Juan Diego, "the talking eagle"! Show us the way that leads to the "Dark Virgin" of Tepeyac, that she may receive us in the depths of her heart, for she is the loving, compassionate Mother who guides us to the true God. Amen.

Juan Diego and Mary, reflection by Msgr. Andrew Vaccari

We need the Holy Spirit and we need the presence of Our Lady who trusts in God.  We need the Spirit to inspire the laity also to speak out in defense of respect for human life.  Tomorrow in the canonization of Juan Diego, the world’s attention will again be turned to the “Patroness of the Unborn” as Our Lady of Guadalupe is known.  Our Church must speak on behalf of the unborn, and the laity must speak on behalf of the unborn.  The hierarchy must speak, too, but in these days the hierarchy has suffered a great loss of credibility, and it will take time to restore it.  The unborn don’t have time.  Time was up for many 29 years ago when Roe vs. Wade issued its death sentence.  So many lay Catholics have been leaders in the pro-life movement.  They have looked to the hierarchy, rightfully so, for leadership and the hierarchy has given it and will continue to give it.  I wonder now if its voice will be heard as well, though, if it will be received as well.  They will continue to champion the cause of the unborn, but now more than ever the Church needs to be reunited and strengthened in the Spirit.  The culture of death has won many victories.  It seems that the opinions of Catholics aren’t much different from non-Catholics’.  “Termination of pregnancy,” the euphemism used for abortion, has won the day in popular society. There have been some victories and some progress, but we still have a long way to go.

Mary, who was with the Apostles as the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Church, continues to be with us today.  She continues to guide and inspire us to speak out bravely on the issues that defend life.  She reminds us that we have to be with the needy, the hungry, the weak, and the outcast.  She is a woman of trust.  She reminds us to keep faith even when it seems that we can’t do what we’d like to do.  We continue to go forward and to struggle.

At the Annunciation, at Cana, at Calvary, at Pentecost Our Lady leads us, guides us and teaches us to be people of trust.  She teaches us to put our faith in God Who can do more than we can imagine.  As St. Bernard said, “Mary is that resplendent and radiant star placed as a necessary beacon above life’s great and spacious sea.  With her for a guide, you shall never go astray.  While invoking her, you shall never lose heart.  As long as she is in your mind, you are free from deception. While she holds your hand, you cannot fail.  Under her protection, you have nothing to fear.  If she walks before you, you shall not grow weary.  If she shows you favor, you shall reach the goal.”

Our Lady of Guadalupe

A dialogue of love and election….

Our Lady’s tender conversation with Juan Diego, is what motivated him to drop everything and follow her totally unreasonable commands!
1. In this reflection we would like to ponder how Mary has her way with us just as she did with her Son Jesus (Cana).
2. How does the virgin de Guadalupe shape us, mother us, bring us up like her Son Jesus? She formed him in his humanity, and she will form us.
3. This Reflection will ponder her way and assist us to respond to her more fully.

New Encyclical!!

Charity in Truth

Meditated Rosary: Pope Benedict’s Encyclical, CARITAS IN VERITATE, #1

Special Intention: Conversion of mind and heart in preparation for the AO General Assembly 2009

FIRST MYSTERY: Charity in truth, to which Jesus Christ bore witness by his earthly life and especially by his death and resurrection, is the principal driving force behind the authentic development of every person and of all humanity.

·        In this mystery we pray for awareness of the witness Charity in truth in Jesus Christ.

SECOND MYSTERY: Love — caritas — is an extraordinary force which leads people to opt for courageous and generous engagement in the field of justice and peace. It is a force that has its origin in God, Eternal Love and Absolute Truth. Each person finds his good by adherence to God's plan for him, in order to realize it fully: in this plan, he finds his truth, and through adherence to this truth he becomes free (cf. Jn 8:22).

·        Let us pray to the Holy Spirit to enlighten us in the work living out God’s plan in love and truth.

THIRD MYSTERY: To defend the truth, to articulate it with humility and conviction, and to bear witness to it in life are therefore exacting and indispensable forms of charity. Charity, in fact, “rejoices in the truth” (1 Cor 13:6).

·        Let us pray to the Holy Spirit to help us rejoice in the truth and live it!

FOURTH MYSTERY: All people feel the interior impulse to love authentically: love and truth never abandon them completely, because these are the vocation planted by God in the heart and mind of every human person. The search for love and truth is purified and liberated by Jesus Christ from the impoverishment that our humanity brings to it, and he reveals to us in all its fullness the initiative of love and the plan for true life that God has prepared for us

·        .Let us continually meditate the movements of the Holy Spirit that lead us to live out the plan of love that God has for every human person.

FIFTH MYSTERY: In Christ, charity in truth becomes the Face of his Person, a vocation for us to love our brothers and sisters in the truth of his plan. Indeed, he himself is the Truth (cf. Jn 14:6).

·        We are invited in this mystery to see in Christ our vocation to love our brothers and sisters in the truth.

Give us the Spirit of Love to guide us in living out your message, form in us the image of your Son and grant us the courage to extend to all, your invitation to holiness” (G. Giaquinta)

We had 20 campers, 6 awesome counselors, and helpers both for Joan & I and for the kitchen crew (Leonard!).

We had toilets that worked.  We had perfect weather (the rain stopped Friday at noon!)

The counselor training went from 3:00 - 5:00.  We Learned songs and discussed games.  We went over the entire schedule and rules.  The counselors prepared and lead a 40 minute session with their own group Saturday morning, designing a skit, learning Bible Verses and praying.  This added training made a big difference, even with the wonderful quality of counselors we started with.  Kathy and the other volunteers provided us with a nice sandwich supper.  (I was going to order pizza from the bowling alley.)

The kids enjoyed the crafts and activities which included tying knots, making crucifixes, New Testament Bingo, painting their own portrait of Paul (i.e. one girl after hearing he was a 'tough cookie' drew a chocolate chip cookie with a beard and a sword!).  We played games outside, visited the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in small groups, and had a 'race to the Cross' which was a little scary if you were holding one of the large crosses while 30 kids ran toward you at full speed!  Fr. Tim and Fr. Augustin (from Sierra Leon - Africa) spent the entire Saturday morning with us, even doing crafts with us.  They were both appreciative of receiving a copy of The Cenacle.  Fr. Augustin took several copies to pass out to his priests.  We had wonderful skits!  Each of the three goups (The Ephesians, the Philippians, and the Corinthians) acted out parts of Paul's journeys with creativity and humor - sometimes lots of humor!  They repeatedly asked for more time to practice, so we gave it to them, then they performed for each other during our long journey outside through the yards (I mean through the Mediterranean), and then for the parents.  Our final show and meal was in the basement of the Church, which was really "comfortable."

We had about four journaling times.  We visited the hospital in small groups.  About 6 of the 20 kids memorized a Bible verse and won a prize.

Saturday night Leonard and I went to the movie in town and ran into several campers and counselors there.  I can highly recommend the buttered popcorn!  Sunday morning we attended Mass after sleeping very late.  Fr. Augustin talked about our covenant with Christ, and about his mission, and also about Pro Sanctity and the Niobrara House of Prayer.  Then Kathy and LeRoy took us into South Dakota for a big buffet and to see a Reservation Indian Catholic Church.  Beautiful!!  We part ways until 4 p.m.  Taking the extra time to hang around town was a wonderful way to round out the weekend.

We discussed camp during our travels.  Next year, we would like to have camp the weekend of June 11 (the second weekend works well for them - and for us.)  We want to go Friday 6 p.m. to Sunday, ending with a 11:00 parish mass and potluck.  We will add Bunko and Bowling.  Counselor training can be Friday afternoon, and maybe we can add some prep time for them. Leonard and I tentatively are planning on going up Thursday again, and staying for a couple days afterwards.

We invited Leroy and Kathy to visit Elkhorn, the Omaha Bethany, and our home in Columbus.  They are considering coming for the Fall Family Festival.  We all think it would be good for more people around here to meet are friends from the House of Prayer in Lynch, Nebraska

Well, that's a little summary for you.  We missed you Teresa, and we want to share our joy of the weekend with you and Franca.

Easter 2009

And we, risen with Christ through Baptism, must now follow him faithfully in holiness of life, advancing towards the eternal Passover, sustained by the knowledge that the difficulties, struggles and trials of human life, including death, henceforth can no longer separate us from him and his love. Pope Benedict XVI

You are a Priest Forever!

The Pro Sanctity Movement congratulates Fr. Frank Jindra, Apostolic Sodales and pastor of St. Lawrence Parish in Silver Creek, Ss. Peter and Paul Parish in Krakow, and St. Rose of Lima Parish, Genoa, Ne on the occasion of his silver jubilee as a priest of Jesus Christ! Thank you Father for the daily sacrifice you offer to God on behalf of the world! We thank God for the gift of your vocation and ask for His continual blessing on your priestly ministry.

To live in the midst of the world without wishing its pleasures; to be a member of each family, yet belonging to one; to share all sufferings; to penetrate all secrets; to heal all wounds; to go from men to God and offer him their prayers; to return from God to men to bring pardon and hope; to have a heart of fire for charity and a heart of bronze for chastity; to teach and to pardon, console and bless always, my God, what a life! And it is yours, O Priest of Jesus Christ!

Pentecost: The Hour of Holiness

The General Moderator of the Apostolic Oblates, Caterina Fava, announced the theme for the General Assembly, The Hour of Holiness, in November 2008. In her letter she recalls the words of Giuliana Spigone,

"'This is the hour of holiness presented to us by God. It is the hour that we not only must welcome, but also present to the world as the most beautiful and attractive event. The walk that will lead us to recapture the gift that was given to us begins here and now, with us. To begin this walk with a renewed eye that sees through the events, hears the cry of humanity, and faces the challenges implied in holiness and fraternity.' (2007, Giuliana)

Caterina continues with words from Bishop Giaquinta,

These words – also validated and reiterated by our 'Father' – impel us to a radical and maximalist effort proper to holiness. The Founder writes, 'Sons and daughters, this is no longer the hour for empty words or controversies, but for action. We were born revolutionaries, but if we don’t react to the possible danger of middle-class attitudes, we run the risk of remaining outdated… I beg you, in God’s name, to talk less but to pray and pay more. Christ is the one who reveals the Father, but in order to bring about such revelation He paid with his own person. We must walk in His footsteps. For this is what the Church and the world expect from us. All the years past…claim our consistency, our generosity, and adherence to a risky acceptance perhaps greater that the initial one' (IV. Letter of 1974).

For us, too, today is the hour of saints. Today, we are called to prove that holiness is a necessity in this historical time, and in the Church that we love. This is the hour of God, of the Holy One, Whom we are called to re-incarnate, as it were, in our selves, and in our life, especially during this particular year. 'For I, the Lord, am your God' (Lev 11:44). (Caterina Fava, Nov. 2008)

Spirit of light and fire, stir up in us the gifts You bestowed on us at the moment of our baptism. Spirit of holiness, let this be the hour that we open our hearts to You, as You are already present and acting in our lives. Spirit of love, transform our hearts into temples of adoration before the Father and sanctuaries of peace for our brothers and sisters. Spirit of joy and peace, may the Easter joy that Christ has released upon His Church make us credible witnesses of the mission entrusted to us.
